The History of H.F.D.

The Hutchinson Fire Department boasts a long and proud tradition. Organized in 1884, the department provides Emergency Services to the Cities of Hutchinson, Biscay, and Cedar Mills, Minnesota, and the townships of Hutchinson, Hassan Valley, Acoma, Lynn, Collins, Boon Lake, Cedar Mills, and Ellsworth. As the community changes and grows our 35 member department strives to keep pace with improved equipment, better training and greater fire prevention campaigns.

Officer Only Response

In 2004, Hutchinson Fire Department implemented a “pilot program” for officer only responses on minor calls that do not require a full department response. This program was developed to keep our firefighters working at their full time jobs and save tax dollars. In the first year, it saved Hutchinson taxpayers over $14,200 alone! It has progressively saved more money per year including over $30,000 in 2007.

Dispatch

Hutchinson Fire Department is dispatched by Hutchinson Police Services on all calls. If McLeod County Sheriff’s Department or MN State Patrol receive a fire department related call, they forward the call to a Hutchinson dispatcher so appropriate emergency services can be rendered.

McLeod County Sheriff’s Department’s serves as a backup in the event Hutchinson’s dispatch would incur problems.

911 News

Fire Chief Brad Emans started a monthly TV show on HCVN Channel 10 in September, 2001. Initially, it featured a monthly guest/topic from a public safety related field. In 2007 the format changed to monthly activities by the fire department and added his wife Sonia Emans as co-host. To find out when 911 News airs next, visit HCVN’s Web site.
